It is believed that West Indian manatees require some access to freshwater (PDF) in order to stay hydrated, but they are able to easily move between the two ecosystems. A West Indian .   West Indian Manatee Habitat. The West Indian manatee favors freshwater environments, but is also found in brackish (a mix of fresh and salt water) and saltwater systems. It has been observed in rivers, estuaries, canals, lagoons, coastal areas and saltwater bays.

Freshwater Algae: Identification and Use as Bioindicators provides a comprehensive guide to temperate freshwater algae, with additional information on key species in relation to environmental characteristics and implications for aquatic management. The book uniquely combines practical material on techniques and water quality management with basic algal taxonomy and the role of algae .   Freshwater Algae: Identification and Use as Bioindicatorsis divided into two parts. Part I describes techniques for thesampling, measuring and observation of algae and then looks at therole of algae as bioindicators and the implications for aquaticmanagement. Part II provides the identification of major genera and important species.5/5(1).

The color micrographs are excellent, portraying algae at their most beautiful. The other half of the book contains some basic information about algae that is at the undergraduate college level. Note that this is book is not an identification manual, which is sorely needed, but a coffee-table book Cited by: The book offers very good discriptions and lots of helpful illustrations.

The one thing I don't like about the book is that it fails to include size ranges of the organisms. I would highly advise anyone who deals with freshwater algae on a regular basis to pick up this book.

It will definately come in handy!!/5(7). Catalogue of the marine Algae of the West Indian region Item Preview remove-circle This book is available with additional data at Biodiversity Heritage Library.

In the following years, these algae, always considered as one species, captured the interest of many phycologists who tried to clarify their systematic position. Because of their simple morphology and the absence of sophisticated means of investigation, these algae were variously identified as Palmella orsiniana (Chlorophyta) (Kützing.

In contrast, corals significantly inhibited algal growth, suggesting. 1 Introduction to Freshwater Algae 1. General introduction 1.
